Living In The Canary Islands

When we think about living in the Canary Islands we think about sun, warm climate through out the year, and beaches, which is right, but we tend to forget about the cost of living in the Canary Islands, which we need to take into consideration when moving to Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura or any of the islands of the Canaries.
The Canary Islands have special tax status within the borders of Spain. There is no VAT or tax on cigarettes, electronics, and alcohol, which means we will pay 17,5% less than in mainland Spain. When it comes to apartment or home rentals the average price in the Canaries is the same as in the smaller towns of mainland Spain, which is from €500 upwards for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartments.
When it comes to our groceries, supermarkets and home shopping in the Canaries, groceries are always more expensive than in mainland Spain or Europe, specially fruits and vegetables, paying an average price of 20% more than in Spain, this is because most of the groceries come from outside the Canaries, mainly from Spain and overseas, and the cost of transport adds up to your final bill. Simple things such as tooth paste, cleaning products, furniture, or even a bottle of water.
If we are thinking about working in the Canary Islands we will have an average wage higher than in mainland Spain, that is because the companies in the Canary Islands pay a little extra to their employees in order to live in the Canaries
